I am a huge advocate for feeding our pets species-appropriate diets, and for dogs that would be raw and fresh food. Sheila is typically raw fed when I’m stationary but obviously, that isn’t really an option in the Subaru. It’s a little different but feeding my dog fresh food while living in a car is totally doable!

Typically, when we’re traveling I feed Sheila either The Honest Kitchen or Sojos dehydrated food. But lately, with all the supply shortages it has been really hard to find either! I was dropping her off at daycare for a weekend and had to get more food and all I could find was The Honest Kitchen clusters.

Clusters are a fancy name for kibble, which I don’t love, but I felt better about it than my other options so we went with it. But just because she’s currently on a kibble doesn’t mean I can’t add some healthy toppers!

Boosting your dog’s meals is super easy! You can pretty much add any dog-safe fresh food. But again, because I’m living in my car, I’m not able to keep a ton on hand. So in this case I stick with dehydrated and air-dried products.

Every morning I start by adding her kibble to a spiral slow feeder bowl. I then sprinkle in some of The Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated turkey bone broth. I also added some ground green lipped mussels, beef green tripe, beef spleen, and California sardines from Real Dog Box. I topped it all off with some warm water and let it rehydrate for a few minutes.

Some Fresh is Better Than None

For me, I choose to feed my dog raw food when I can. But I know that for various reasons that may not be an option for everyone. In those situations, I always recommend adding some fresh food. It’s like having a cheeseburger with a salad. 🙂

There are tons of easy things you can do! Here are just a few:

  • Add some of your raw meat scraps from your meal preperation
  • Add raw goat milk, kefir, or plain greek yogurt
  • Add air-dried or freeze dried toppers
  • Add some of your extra veggies (lightly steamed or pureed is best for digestion)

I use my monthly Real Dog Box to boost Sheila’s bowl when I can’t feed raw. The seafood, organ, and muscle treats are awesome for toppers and she loves them! Abd the chews are great for mental stimulation and dental health! Plus, it’s sent to me automatically each month so I don’t have to think about it.

I was finally able to find a bag of Sojo’s again so after we finish her clusters we’ll switch back to that. But even when feeding a dehydrated food I will continue to add fresh toppers!
