I’ve probably mentioned it before but I”m cheap. I don’t like paying for things when I know I can get them for free. Camping is one of those things. So how do I find free campsites?

There are actually quite a few great resources to help you find free campsites. Some are websites, some are apps, and some are both! There are of course paid platforms as well but I only use the free ones so I’ll focus on those.

All of these sites are community-based. If you find a spot through any of these be sure to leave a review and add any helpful info for the next campers.

FreeCampsites.net

This is a super simple site but it gets the job done. You can search specific areas and filter the options that are appropriate for you. I have probably used this site more than any other. The info is usually accurate and I feel like people are regularly updating it.

FreeRoam

FreeRoam is great to find campsites and it also has a cool trip planning feature. You can filter for things like cell signal which is great if you’re like me and need to have phone service in order to work. You can also filter for paid sites and different types of campsites if you want something a little fancier.

iOverlander

iOverlander’s website is not my favorite but the app is awesome! They have a ton of filters not only for campsites but also mechanics, dump stations, showers, laundromats, and more. If you are traveling a lot this app is a must have.

BLM Website

This is usually my last resort but it can be helpful. The website can be a bit clunky and confusing but it is a great resource. You can find established campgrounds as well as dispersed camping. Most BLM land is open for public use but be sure to double check before setting up camp!

Forest Service Website

The USFS website isn’t the most user friendly but if you are looking for campsites in a specific area it’s great. A lot of national forests have free dispersed camping as well as developed campgrounds. National forests are some of my favorite places to camp and I use this resource often.

Living in my car definitely has it’s challenges but finding free campsites doesn’t have to be one of them. I hope you find these resources useful. If you have others to add be sure to drop them in the comments!
