Sheila and I recently went on a paddle boarding road trip for my birthday. It was so great to have no plan and just explore! We ended up in Durango, Colorado, and eventually went north from there.

While in search of lakes to paddleboard on we discovered Molas Lake!

About Molas Lake

So there are actually two neighboring lakes, Molas Lake and Little Molas Lake (adorable right?) I’m talking specifically about my experience at Molas Lake.

Molas Lake is located on Highway 550 just south of Silverton. The road from either direction is windy with a lot of elevation change so be aware, that if you don’t like heights it may feel a little scary at times. The views however are amazing!

Molas Lake is both a campground and recreation area. It has 58 campsites, pay showers, a small store, bathrooms, and a day-use area with grills and picnic tables.

Like most places in the area, it’s seasonal. Reservations open up on January 1st and the lake/campground opens on June 1st. Camping rates vary from $25-68 per night depending on site type and date.

Why You Should Visit Molas Lake

Obviously, the views are incredible! If you are looking for a scenic place to relax and enjoy some time on the water this is the spot!

The water is of course cold but crystal clear. They do not allow motorized watercraft (electric trolling motors are ok) so it’s generally quiet and you don’t have to worry about speeding boats coming at you if you’re on a paddleboard or kayak.

The lake is generally stocked so if fishing is more your jam it should be a good time! They also offer kayak and paddle board rentals.

Pet Friendly

Of course, I don’t visit somewhere if Sheila isn’t allowed so this is super important to me! Pets are allowed but must remain on leash and you must clean up after them. Sheila had an absolute blast sniffing around the shoreline and splashing in the water.

I saw a few other people and their dogs on the shore and it seemed like everyone was respecting the rules.

Remember, this is at a high elevation. Be sure to protect your dog from sunburn and ensure they drink plenty of water.

Molas Lake Day Use

Molas Lake is kind of a hidden gem. Even though it’s right off the highway it has a quiet and peaceful feel about it. I don’t love crowds, and I imagine this lake will be busier at the peak of summer, but I feel like there is enough space to spread out and be comfortable.

Because they don’t allow motor boats there are minimal waves (unless it’s a windy day) and the small size means you can paddle the whole thing in a short amount of time.

But don’t let the small size fool you! You can easily spend hours paddling to different areas, exploring the shoreline, and enjoying the magnificent views.

Day use at Molas Lake is free! There is plenty of parking and easy access to the water.

Be sure to stop in the shop! The woman working was extremely friendly and answered all of my questions. They have snacks and some knick-knacks. They also have information about the local area.

If you’ll be traveling near the Durango area I highly recommend driving the “million dollar highway” and checking out Molas Lake recreation area. It’s a wonderful place for some kayaking or paddleboarding and perfect if you need a nice picnic spot to stretch your legs.
